Artist Research - Erik Johansson

Im still learning from Johansson. I’m watching all of his ‘behind the scenes’ time lapse (making of) videos which are YouTube videos linked off his website and sure, some of it is just money, time & professional assistance, luxuries most of us starting out don’t have. But some of it isn’t.

The woman ‘falling’ asleep was done in a water tank…and could just as easily be done in a pool with an underwater housing & pool lighting. And the speed light in the lampshade, great idea. I also saw some lighting / highlights he puts in the image. Because of the order in the video, it's clear it is post production. So that’s something to learn up on, as that will be super useful to me.

They are all about 2 min long and there are only 15 of them, so it is worth spending the 1/2 hour or so watching them. I think a photographer that provides so much about the making of their work, especially when it is technique, is very generous and it shows confidence in your work too. Clearly it is not just technique what sets him apart as a photographer.

Yet it is very….male. If only he wasn’t saying just man stuff! Is that fair? I just feel I would know he wasn’t female for sure seeing his images.
