Artist Research - Week (-)3: Haegue Yang

I am researching for this semester. Although wanting to do video, and I really feel if you feel strongly about a medium you wish to explore, one should, I had the strong advice I should link it to my work thus far.

Common themes are time, memory, loss and loneliness and ‘home’. The human condition, or mine, in this regard. Trying to have this resonate with others too.

I tried this in my 2nd last semester in my undergrad with still photography. I failed. Yet this led to my final semesters work which I was proud of. ‘The Lost Highway’.

I looked at a Korean artist Haegue Yang. For her exhibition at the Bass In Miami Beach “Coordinates of Speculative Solidarity,” she found a commonality amongst the residents. Hurricanes. “In the Cone of Uncertainty,” is ‘a chaotic floor-to-ceiling digital collage swirling with storm-tracking symbols, satellite photos of Floridian McMansions, distorted palm trees and sinister gyres that covers vast swathes of the museum like dystopian wallpaper.’ https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/26/t-magazine/haegue-yang.html

This resonated with me, having done an artist residency in Tokyo. A city constantly rebuilding itself, living in the fear of constant disaster and replacing that fear with distraction after distraction.

Im simply looking around at this point and trying to focus my final semesters work on what interests me.
