Lighting experiments

Well that's annoying images load up backwards, so I guess we will go backwards.

This is using my speed light (without umbrella reflector) pointed at the white door, trying to get it to backlight. No fill. Its better than with the reflector but there is barely any backlight and obviously ambient light off the flash is still lighting the front.

Speed light pointed at the reflector which is pointed towards the white door, trying to get it to backlight. Fill is on the warm light setting. There is barely any backlight and more ambient light off the reflected flash is still lighting the front. Not much definition and the subjects face is not defined. Actually with cheeks and eyebrow & socket emphasised, its not a great definition. Yet of the 4 fill settings, this is the most flattering, I feel.

Same as before with fill light on the soft cool setting. Less definition than before. Very flat.

Same as before with fill light on the soft cool setting. Less definition than before. Very flat.

Same as before with fill light on the soft warm setting. No definition on body and barely any on the face. Quite flat.

Same as before with fill light on the cool setting. A little more definition on face and arms than before.

This is the studio light on warm setting (as all are following) used as backlight rim by itself to see what it does by itself. Face is completely lost with only the profile lit. Below is the Speedlight flash (with umbrella reflector) as key and studio as backlight moved a little to camera right

Speedlight flash (with umbrella reflector) with an incandescent globe (bedside table light) as backlight rim. cant see any definition to the front. Can't see her face

Speedlight flash (with umbrella reflector) as key by itself. Just for reference

Key as above but with studio light as fill. No backlight. Face is defined but neck isn't, so this changes the look from ones below.

Key with studio light as backlight. I just think too much, it is too dispersed (the lines are wide) and bright. The diffuser fabric is on the backlight. Its is soft and maybe 'dreamily' lit.

As above with backlight moved around camera left (you can see it). It is subtler in definition but the face is looking less defined

All 3 lights, Key and fill as before with backlight incandescent off to the right. It is just giving the barest hint of shading to the bum, back and shoulder but I think it is giving separation between the subject and background

As above with backlight moved centre right behind subject. We seem to have lost some definition and separation.

I think this is the best. As above with backlight to camera left behind subject. It seems the best definition and separation. I think being a 3W domestic globe (oops, so its obviously LED, a warm one from Ikea) you don't get much backlight, you cant do what you could with a proper studio light or get the dramatic affects, but it still works to separate and give a bare definition. So the experiment was worth it to see what I could do with the lights I have at home, on hand.
