Week 7 - Reflection on Review A

Updated: Sep 11, 2020

I understand the difficulties of just showing 2 images. The reviewers (well, Kirsten Lyttle) wanted to now more amount what I use as a guide / constraints. Also which days I chose and why. How many images were going to make up the series.

Firstly, I'm glad both reviewers asked about the series in general. Because I wanted to get a read of my ideas for Australia day. For my guide in quality, I dont want to polarise and I started with some elements of 'quality' in that they were shot by me. The action. To pop. And I am struggling with this now. Pixelation. I want the images to be good enough for A2 size prints, yet the idea of cards means simply A5. And I feel with strong beginning and end (well, christmas day, 2nd from end) I can deviate a bit. And celebrate the non-ownership of the images and the source they came from. The constraints of the choice of days was going through the year and writing all of interest down. 11 that I reduced to 7 as they had been commercialised & repositioned away from christian and / or original roots, I had strong feelings about, had international presence and were National. Also the constraints I've developed. Visual joke, humour, clear.

David said the framework was working well and the words. He saw anger in the images. Great.

Kirsten mentioned 'celebrating cultural cringe & cultural pride' and mentioned Trent Parke - Christmas tree bucket (which is by far my favourite series of his work - most of which I also love) and Lee Grant - Belco Pride, which i also love. 'Belco is a hole but it's our hole'. These were mainly in discussing the 'Australia Day' image, which I had already named invasion, survival, etc day way back in week 3. It was great to get a conversation on this work and the way I had approached the 4 or 5 tries at images and what I wasn't happy with.

I looked at Lee Grants series again and found a great text quote. 'Belonging, connection & identity is deeply rooted in the specifics of ones inhabited landscape'.

I looked at Trent Parkes series again and got very inspired by his presentation. A red Christmas themed family picture album.

I do find the reviews too polite. I'm hear to learn and improve. I will mention this to my supervisor. The feedback is a little hard to read, because of this.

Lastly, I mentioned how excited anytime I get to present / have a conversation about, make, plan or research this project. I hope I can do that anticipation and promise justice.
